HP Pavillion notebook dv9000 series will not connect to external monitor

Hi,

The screen on my HP laptop broke, and all I can see is a small portion of the screen in the top left corner. It's not enough to see popups or drag windows over to my view or anything like that. It's just enough to get into safe mode, to see if I'm in safe mode, to see if I'm at the log on screen, to see if I'm in normal mode etc..

It was working perfectly fine for months (I never fixed the screen because I intended to use it this way anyway), and it suddenly stopped connecting to external monitors after it was accidentally disconnected from the external monitor. I tried restarting multiple times, tried enabling VGA mode, tried going into safe mode, tried using a different external monitor. And yes, I tried Fn+F4 with both external monitors, and although the monitors definitely acknowledge that they're connected to the laptop, all that happens is the laptop screen goes black and then comes back on. If I pressed Fn+F4 again, it goes goes black until I once again press Fn+F4. I tried pressing left 3 times then pressing enter, and I even got desperate and tried many other combinations.

HP Pavillion notebook dv9000 series, Windows XP. It says dv97000 and dv9726ca on the bottom.
