I just purchased a used HP G62 online and was really happy until I was watching a YT video and the LCD screen went totally white. I could not get it to come back to normal, so I eventually shut it down <powered it down>
I was able to get it to boot again and used it for a few hours, then powered it down overnight. The next day, I used the system and set up some additional user accounts, and got the white screen again while switching users. Up to this point, the system was sitting on a table un-disturbed and running on the power adapter.
I poked around on this forum for troubleshooting ti[s and decided to hook the laptop to a flat screen external VGA display, so I went on battery power to another room and cabled up the monitor, but did not see any output. It looks like I may need to use a key toggle (fn+F4?) to activate the VGA, but I tried that and that did not work.
It white screened several times as I tried to get it to boot to a point where I could get into the OS and see if I could lok at the video properties.
Once while rebooting, the white screen popped up shortly after the boot manager screen, but this time, it was while loading the OS. I powered off again and I managed to get into the BIOS setup to see if I could figure out how to toggle the VGA output. Sometimes I would get the white screen before I could select another option, like diagnostics. I eventually got the diagnostics to run and everything ran with no errors, although I was very careful not to touch it.
It seems to be a hardware issue, and I have a few guesses, but would like to fix it without buying a bunch of different parts and have not worked on this kind of laptop before (have worked on a couple of others though.)
Can you recommend additional troubleshooting steps ?
Am I missing something on the external VGA test... Seems I should have some output if the video card is good.
Do I have to toggle to get the external display to work, or should it work when I cable it up ?
Have you seen a fix for this particular white screen issue ?
Edit:
Found that the key directly under the "z" key on the keyboard works a the FN button (looks like the FN button and the Windows key is swapped on mine??). So I toggled to clone the display, and when I pulled the power adapter loose, the system went to white screen again. This time, I plugged in the external VGA cable and the G62 LCD display went dark and the external monitor is working...
I disconnected the external VGA cable and the white screen came back for a second, then it went black (changing resolution or something) and came back to normal. I tried this a couple of times and it worked 2 out of 3 times to recover the screen to normal.
I found a video on YouTube for G62 white screen fix by alwaysafix - he shows reseating the LCD end of the VGA cable as a fix. Looking for small tools now to take the top LCD cover off so I can reseat that end of the VGA cable.
